Rural tourism meets astronomy as senior district officials experience stargazing through Astro Guides trained by StarGazing India

Rural tourism in Madhya Pradesh received a celestial touch when Narmadapuram Collector Somesh Mishra, along with senior district officials, spent the night at Chhedka village in the Satpura region, experiencing the village's homestay facilities, local cuisine and a specially conducted Stargazing activity facilitated through Astro Guides trained by StarGazing India with the project under Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board.

The visit was organised under the “Prashasan Aapke Dwar” initiative, with the broader objective of strengthening rural tourism and experiencing tourism infrastructure at the grassroots level.

During the evening, officials participated in a guided astronomy session conducted by the StarGazing India team, using telescopes to observe the Moon and other celestial objects.

The session offered an opportunity to experience astronomy beyond classrooms and observatories—right from a rural homestay surrounded by the natural landscape of the Satpura region.

🔭 Connecting Rural Tourism with the Night Sky

Through telescopic observation and discussions, participants explored several visible celestial objects, including the Saptarishi (Big Dipper/Ursa Major) and Venus, traditionally known in India as the Morning Star or Evening Star depending on its appearance in the sky.

The StarGazing India team also shared interesting information related to astronomy, nature and the night sky, creating an engaging experience for the participating officials and local community.

For StarGazing India, such experiences represent an important dimension of Astro-Tourism—using astronomy as an additional attraction that can extend the tourism experience beyond daylight hours.

A village that offers forests, wildlife, local culture and homestays can also become a place where visitors spend the evening looking at planets, stars and distant celestial objects.

🌾 Astronomy Meets Local Culture

The evening was not limited to astronomy.

The visiting officials also experienced traditional food prepared from millets, including local preparations such as roti and kheer, while experiencing the facilities available at the Satpura Tribal Homestay.

The combination of homestays, traditional food, local culture, nature and stargazing demonstrates how rural destinations can create a distinctive tourism experience rooted in the identity of the village itself.

🌌 A New Dimension for Rural Tourism

Collector Somesh Mishra highlighted the potential of homestays as an effective initiative for promoting rural tourism. According to the report, such initiatives can allow visitors to experience rural lifestyles, natural beauty and local culture, while also creating opportunities for local employment and self-employment.

This is where Astro-Tourism can play a significant role.

Unlike many conventional tourism activities that largely operate during daylight hours, stargazing creates an opportunity to activate a destination after sunset.

For villages located near forests, wildlife reserves and naturally dark landscapes, the night sky can become another tourism asset.

StarGazing India's involvement in Chhedka reflects its broader approach to Astro-Tourism development in Madhya Pradesh in association with Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board—not simply bringing telescopes to tourist destinations, but developing the knowledge, skills and local ecosystem required to make astronomy a sustainable tourism activity.

Training local youth as Astro Guides, introducing visitors to the night sky, operating telescopes and connecting astronomy with local culture can create new experiences as well as new livelihood opportunities.

सोहागपुर। राज न्यूज नेटवर्क। शुक्रवार को कलेक्टर श्री सोमेश मिश्रा ने प्रशासन आपके द्वारा अभियान के अंतर्गत सोहागपुर के पर्यटक ग्राम छेड़का में रात्रि विश्राम किया। इस दौरान पुलिस अधीक्षक एस कृष्णा एस थोटा, डीएफओ गौरव शर्मा, जिला पंचायत सीईओ हिमांशु जैन सहित अन्य प्रशासनिक अधिकारियों ने भी ग्राम छेड़का में ग्रामीण पर्यटन विकास को दृष्टिगत रखते हुए तैयार किए गए होम-स्टे में रात्रि विश्राम किया।

रात्रि विश्राम के दौरान अधिकारियों ने स्टार गेजिंग गतिविधि में सहभागिता करते हुए टेलीस्कोप के माध्यम से चंद्रमा एवं अन्य खगोलीय पिंडों का अवलोकन किया। इस अवसर पर प्रकृति एवं खगोल विज्ञान से संबंधित रोचक जानकारियों पर भी चर्चा की गई। कलेक्टर श्री सोमेश मिश्रा सहित अन्य अधिकारियों ने सप्त ऋषि, शुक्र ग्रह जिसे 'सुबह का तारा' या 'शाम का तारा' कहा जाता है, सहित अन्य खगोलीय संरचनाओं को टेलीस्कोप के माध्यम से देखा। आसमान में दिखाई देने वाली खगोलीय घटनाओं एवं प्राकृतिक गतिविधियों को देखकर सभी अधिकारी रोमांचित हुए।

कलेक्टर श्री सोमेश मिश्रा ने सतपुड़ा ट्राइबल होम-स्टे में रात्रि विश्राम के दौरान मिलेट्स से बने पारंपरिक व्यंजनों का स्वाद लिया तथा होम-स्टे में पर्यटकों को उपलब्ध कराई जा रही सुविधाओं का स्वयं अनुभव किया।

इस दौरान एसपी नर्मदापुरम, डीएफओ, जिला पंचायत सीईओ एवं अन्य उपस्थित अधिकारियों ने मिलेट्स से बनी रोटी, खीर एवं अन्य स्थानीय व्यंजनों का स्वाद चखा।

कलेक्टर सोमेश मिश्रा ने कहा कि होम-स्टे ग्रामीण पर्यटन को बढ़ावा देने की एक प्रभावी एवं व्यापक पहल है। इसके माध्यम से पर्यटकों को ग्रामीण जीवन शैली, प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य एवं स्थानीय संस्कृति का विशेष अनुभव प्राप्त होता है। उन्होंने कहा कि इस प्रकार की पहल से स्थानीय रोजगार एवं स्वरोजगार के अवसर भी बढ़ेंगे तथा ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों की सांस्कृतिक पहचान को नई पहचान मिलेगी।
